Eligibility and Selection Criteria

To be considered for enrollment in CMPE 399/CMPS 399 Practical Training, students must meet certain eligibility criteria established by the college and adhere to specific selection criteria designed to manage enrollment effectively. Below are the detailed requirements for eligibility and the method by which students will be selected for enrollment.

Eligibility Criteria

As per the College rules, a student is eligible to register for the internship course if he/she satisfies the following requirements and conditions: 

  1. The student has to have finished at least 90 credit hours by the end of Fall 2023.
  2. The student has to have passed English language courses (ENGL 202 and ENGL 203) or equivalent.
  3. No other courses can be combined with the internship during the summer semester.
  4. The approval of the head of the department is required.
  5. The internship must be within the state of Qatar; otherwise, formal approval from the head of the department and the Dean of CENG must be presented to QU higher management for approval.
  6. The student should try hard to find a company for their internship otherwise CSE department will assist in finding a company but there is no guaranteed placement.
  7. For CS students it is highly recommended to complete CMPS 310 Software Engineering so that they will have enough knowledge and skills to deliver a project during the internship.

Selection Criteria

Once eligibility is confirmed, students will be selected for CMPE/CMPS 399 Practical Training in the following order, based on their academic progression and requirements:

  1. Students set to graduate in Summer/Spring 2024 with one remaining elective.
  2. Students set to graduate in Fall 2024 with four remaining electives.
  3. Students set to graduate in Fall 2024 with three remaining electives.
  4. Students set to graduate in Fall 2024 with two remaining electives.
  5. Students set to graduate in Fall 2024 with one remaining elective.
  6. Students set to graduate in Spring 2025 with four remaining electives.
  7. Students set to graduate in Spring 2025 with three remaining electives.

Goal

Provide a professional experience where knowledge from coursework is applied in a real-world setting. Enrich contacts and professional network.

Format

  • The internship is for 7 weeks full time.
  • Internship = supervised 7 weeks training period working on a project at a company
  • Educational experience intended to provide students with hands-on experience at the workplace
  • Student needs to design and develop a working hardware and/or software solution for your assigned project using a systematic development process.

Process

 Early Spring of each academic year, CSE HoD appoint an Internship Coordinator to coordinate the whole process including:
  • Invite students to register their interest to take an internship.
  • Assist with students internship placement in collaboration with the department’s Internship Placement coordinator typically Ms. Shaikha Al-Jaber sh.aljaber@qu.edu.qa ) and CENG.
  • Company visits during the internship.
  • Coordinate the grading of the internship deliverables.

Grading

Important notes​

Since the internship for CE/CS is elective and due to the short period between semesters, the CSE department decided to offer internship ONLY in summer. Students can take other electives to graduate.
