Granada – Hammams

Hammam Al Ándalus Granada

Located at the foot of the Alhambra, just past the old mosque (today the Church of Santa Ana), the Hammam Al Ándalus Granada recaptures the magic of water from Andalusia of bygone years, as reflected in our slogan. Pioneers in the wellbeing, culture and health and leisure industry, our baths are the first to be recovered in Europe to delight the senses. The Arab baths in Granada became a place to both wash oneself and socialise, involving relaxed meetings, enveloped in steam, with soft Andalusian music playing, and the overhead light seeping through the vault skylights. The Hammam Al Ándalus has today recovered that tradition based on the codes of contemporary wellbeing. The building housing the Hammam dates back to the 13th-14th Century and water wells were discovered during archaeological excavations. Both the structure of the property and its proximity to the church of Santa Ana suggests that they were for public use. This discovery leads us to believe that the property acquired for the opening of the Arab Baths sits on an ancient hammam.

The origin of Hammam Al Ándalus Granada

The Hammam Al Ándalus Granada was established in 1998, reconstructing a 14th-Century house, which was a bakery in its day. Its opening involved the recovery of a historical tradition that for centuries had been lost. In 1567, a cultural repression was imposed on the Moors of Granada which included a ban on the use of baths, among other particular hallmarks such as language or Arabic attire. The baths and thermal spas were turned into bakeries, taking advantage of the water heating boilers. This, coupled with the discovery of ancient water cisterns during the archaeological excavation at the site, and the fact that the nearby Church of Santa Ana was originally the ancient mosque, suggests that this Hammam may be located in the same place as the original bath. The decor of this establishment is fully recreated to look like the baths of the Alhambra and preserving the structure or layout of the water rooms, featuring a warm, hot and cold room along with a rest room.
