Article 1: Sculpture has evolved, says US artist Serra

The article talks about Serra’s works in public spaces and public art in general.

 


The article concentrates on Richard Serra and his exhibitions around Doha. In addition to this, it discusses how his works have depicted the role of sculptures within the spaces that they are in.

According to the curator, Alfred Pacquement, Serra’s exhibitions make a statement on how he has influenced sculptures. In addition to this, Pacquement mentioned that the residents of Qatar have already seen one of his works which was ‘Seven’ which makes them used to his art style. Also, he believes that for the last 50 years, large-scale artworks placed in public spaces play as “one of the most important sculpture.”

A quote from Serra which states that “sculpture has come off the pedestal and has entered into the possibility of making a place, and a space where people can walk into, through and around.”

Through all this, public art has been described as an influence to the perception of art on the residents and a creator of space.
