Qatar University signs MoU with QNB
Qatar University (QU) and Qatar National Bank (QNB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cement the relationship between the two institutions in the fields of education, scientific research, and community development. The MoU comes into effect immediately.
The MoU aims to improve and enhance the knowledge for the university’s students in the fields of education, scientific research, executive training, social development as well as business management, IT, and public policies.
QU’s President Dr. Hasan Rashid Al-Derham and QNB’s CEO Mr. Ali Rashid Al-Mohannadi signed the MoU at Qatar University higher administration building. The first in a series of joint initiatives between QU and QNB is a research project on the local banking sector, including a detailed analysis of market trends and the impact of national and international regulations. Other initiatives under the MOU at Qatar University supports QNB’s program are in education and raising awareness in their banking sector, sponsorship of student activities and competition, and the possibility of forming working committees and joint teams and offering consultation in the engineering fields that fall within the scope of this memorandum. Eventually, the memorandum paves the way for the prospect of supporting conferences in the field of computing and smart things, in which researchers from all over the world are invited to present their latest findings in the field of cybersecurity, the Internet of things, the use of technology in the financial and administrative sectors, and more.
Dr. Al-Derham said: “The MoU highlights QU’s continuous efforts to provide solutions to local challenges, in line with national priorities towards a knowledge-based economy”. “It will also serve to facilitate knowledge and technology transfer and provide consultancy and research services, which will contribute to driving socio-economic development and sustainability in the state of Qatar,” he added.
Mr. Al-Mohannadi said: “Following long years of continuous and fruitful co-operation with Qatar University, Qatar’s primary educational institution, this comes as part of our support to education in all its areas and fields.” “We hope that this MoU provides an opportunity to exchange knowledge and to provide our utmost support to improve this agreement’s goals,” he added.
CENG/CSE and CBE organized the Disruptive Technology Applications Stakeholders Workshop
In collaboration with Qatar Rail, the NPRP SupplyLedger project’s team, led by Prof. Abdelaziz Bouras from CSE, organized an Industrial Stakeholders Workshop at Qatar Rail headquarters. The workshop focused on the impact of Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Fintech, and other disruptive technologies impacting the industry and business sectors.
Welcoming speech was delivered by Dr. Khalid Kamal Naji, Dean of CENG at QU in the presence of H.E. Dr. Abdulla Bin Abdulaziz Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Municipality MD & CEO of Qatar Rail who inaugurated the event.
The workshop witnessed the presence of executives from large-scale organizations such as Dr. Mohammed Yousef Al-Mulla, Managing Director and CEO of Qatar Petrochemical Company “QAPCO”, and Eng. Ahmed AL Ansari, Senior Advisor for engineering management of Public Works Authority “Ashghal”. A keynote speech was delivered by Prof. Abdelaziz Bouras highlighting the current Industry 4.0 challenges and requirements from the research perspective, to better integrate those disruptive technologies.
Panel Discussion session gathering experts from industry (Mr. Basil Ayass, Education & Healthcare Lead at Google Cloud, Dr. Guillaume Alinier, Director of Research at Hamad Medical Corporation, and Mr. Mansour Al-Mahmoud, Head of Business Products at Qatar Energy) as well as from academia (Dr. Lotfi Belkhir, Chair of eco-entrepreneurship at McMaster University in Ontario/Canada) took place right after in a hybrid mode, and was followed by a large online audience. The panel addressed important questions and issues, such as “How is digital transformation taking place in your sector?”, “The specific technologies that are disrupting your sector”, “What are the challenges your sector is probably facing?”, “Is there any development or initiative in Qatar related to regulation with regards to disruptive technologies?”, “Which new competencies/skills/abilities are needed?”, and “how to fulfil them in the local context?”. Feedback was also given from the participants on the use of some of the current disruptive technologies (AI, Blockchains, 5G).
Project Investigators from the SupplyLedger project, Dr. Ibrahim Khalil from RMIT (Melbourne) and Prof. Belaid Aouni from QU College of Business, contributed to the discussions and highlighted the advancement of the project from the Blockchain implementation perspective.

CSE Faculty Receives “Best Reviewer Award” at CIKM 2021
Dr. Tamer Elsayed has received a “Best Reviewer Award” at the 30th International Conference on Information on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM) 2021. The award was announced during the conference that was held online last week. The award was given to 30 reviewers out of more than 1,600 reviewers, according to the General Chairs of the conference.

KINDI-CSE talks
The KINDI Center for Computing Research and the CSE department are organizing a series of Talks on Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity where renowned keynote speakers are invited to discuss the latest trends and challenges, along with their latest research work and achievements in these areas.

CSE Participates in Engineering Week 2021
CSE Department participated in the Engineering Week 2021, organized by College of Engineering from Oct. 31st to Nov. 3rd. The department hosted students from government schools (grades 8 and 9) in the Virtual Reality lab, where we some STEM related activities, involving concepts from computing, were presented.
Students were introduced to the programs offered in CSE, and then participated in a 30-minute programming activity. Their task was to program an EV3 robot to avoid obstacles. The activity was organized by Eng. Alaa Hussein and Eng. Amelle Bedair.
CSE Researchers Receive Awards in QU Annual Research Forum and Exhibition
Three researchers from our CSE department have received awards in QU Annual Research Forum and Exhibition 2021. The event brings together students, researchers and academics from the University’s colleges, research centers and institutions, in addition to partners and stakeholders, to assess, review and discuss QU’s research outputs and activities.
The device is developed as part of a collaborative research project titled “Smart assistive tools for people with visual impairments”. Visually impaired users can easily wear it on their head and utilize the device to get assistance for navigation, object recognition, obstacle detection, and text recognition especially in indoor areas. The developed system can provide real-time guidance and notification to the user.
Moreover, Nandhini Subramanian (Research Assistant), Jayakanth Kunhoth (PhD Student and Graduate Research Assistant), Prof. Somaya Al Maadeed (Supervisor and Lead PI of the project), and Prof. Ahmed Bouridane (Professor at University of Sharjah, UAE) won the Best Research Poster Award (Faculty and PostDoc Category) for the poster titled “Stego-eHealth: An eHealth System for Secured Transfer of Medical Images Using Image Steganography”.
The work aims to secure the medical data of the patients using image steganography when transferring through untrusted channels. At the sending end, the medical images are embedded in a normal natural scene image and at the receiving end the embedded medical image is extracted for easy access. This work was part of QNRF NPRP11S-0113- 180276 project led by Prof. Somaya.
