CSE Faculty Participates in Facebook “Ethics in AI Research Initiative for the Asia Pacific” Roundtable

Dr. Junaid Qadir, Professor of Computer Engineering at our department participated in the “Facebook Ethics in AI Research Initiative for the Asia Pacific” Roundtable on 10th September, 2021, and presented an update on the “Culturally-informed pro-social AI regulation and persuasion framework” project. This project is funded by Facebook Research and focuses on studying the ethical issues related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) from an Islamic Perspective and explores culturally-sensitive human-centered AI for the Muslim World. The roundtable was attended by top AI experts and discussants included ethicists, technologists, researchers, and policy makers.

Dr. Junaid is currently teaching the course CMPE483 “Introduction to Robotics” at QU. The course provides a detailed overview of the robotic ecosystem and discusses basic concepts related to sensing, actuation, and robotic intelligence. The course also explores the ethics of using AI and intelligent robots and its socio-technical implications.

To motivate our new students and highlight the importance of programming, the CSE department organized a programming contest for the students who enrolled in all sections in programming concept course (CMPS151). The contest was held in two rounds. In the first round, 24 students participated in 9 teams.  Based on their submissions, the best five teams were shortlisted to continue to the second round. The teams in the second round presented their works to the contest committee. All teams have shown excellent efforts and used a variety of techniques to solve the problems.  

The CSE department would like to thank all participants and would like to congratulate the winners.

CSE participates in Milipol 2021

Prof. Sumaya, and Eng. Naveed Nawaz at Milipol 2021

Milipol 2021 was held in DNCC, Doha, to showcase the latest military software and hardware for homeland security system. Our department faculty member Prof. Sumaya AlMaadeed and her team showcased the food-and-medicine delivery robot, “NARSA”, designed to help people during the COVID pandemic. NARSA was completely built right from the product design to the prototype by Prof. Somaya’s team of engineers and students from Qatar University and personnel from Qatar military. The robot was presented as part of a collaboration program with Huawei.

His Royal Highness the Emir of Qatar and the Prime Minister of Qatar also graced the occasion.
