CSE Senior Projects FAQs

Whom to contact regarding Senior Projects?

For SP inquiries or further details contact the SP Coordinator Dr. Mohammad Saleh mohd.saleh@qu.edu.qa

How students form a team and find a supervisor?

Students have to form a team of 3 students and contact faculty members during the registration period to discuss a potential senior project.

After the registration period, groups without a supervisor will be assigned to a supervisor in collaboration with the department based on each faculty load.

How student can register for the senior project on the Blackboard?

You will receive an email about the start of registration for senior projects where you will be already added to the Blackboard Senior Projects Community.  Then, you have to select a group and ask your team and supervisor to join that group on Blackboard.

See the video on How a student can register/join a group in Blackboard.

What is the eligibilty requirement to register for CS senior project course?

To register for the Senior Project course (CMPS 493), the following requirements should be met:

  • A student must complete 75 CH (for CS) by the end of the summer semester.

  • For CS it is required to complete CMPS 310 - Software Engineering before the Senior Project.

What is the eligibilty requirement to register for CE senior project course?

To register for the Senior Project course (CMPE 498), the following requirements should be met:

  • A studentmustcomplete 83 CH (for CE)by the end of the summer semester.

  • ForCE it is required to complete CMPE 370– Computer Engineering Practicum before/during the Senior Project.

  • CE students must have a CE supervisor.

  • Must have a hardware design. The solution must involve the design and implementation of some products containing hardware components.

Can we have a group of both CE and CS majors?

Yes, however, you have to keep in mind that the demand is higher and need to have proper supervision on both CS and CE:

  • For CE-CS groups, you must satisfy both CE and CS requirements in your final report, which means you have to combine both CS and CE templates and address both hardware and software design.
  • The group has to make clear they can get supervision and assistance in both majors from their supervisor. You can’t complain later that my supervisor is not an expert in hardware/software and I have no help! You must take responsibility if you were not able to take proper supervision.
  • The solution must involve the design and implementation of some products containing hardware and software components.

I don’t have a group for senior project 1 next semester, what should I do?

If you are an individual and you could not join a groupyou can still register in the Blackboard senior project community as an individual and will be assigned later to a group.

Should I still need to register in the Banner If I registered in the Blackboard senior community?

Yes, The registration on Blackboard is not official and the student must register in the Banner at the beginning of the semester. The Banner will check if the student fulfills the above requirement and if not, he/she will not be able to register for the senior. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to make sure he fulfills the eligibility requirement as we had many cases where they failed to register based on their official academic record.

What will happen if I did not meet the eligibility requirement?

You might be able to register in the Blackboard community but you will FAIL to register in the official Banner later and this will cause trouble for your team and senior projects committee.

Can a supervisor have more than one senior project group?

NO. Initially, each supervisor is allowed to supervise one group and he/she can not select two groups. The second group assignment will be decided by the department ONLY based on a load of each faculty.

Is there an exception to have a group of two or four students?

No, each senior group has to have 3 members and there are no exceptions!
The only exception is if we have one student remained at the end of registration and all groups are full, then the only option is to give an exception ONLY in this case. So, it is not a matter of choice for the students.

Can I take Senior Project I in the spring semester?

No, the senior project I ( CMPE 498 / CMPS 493 ) is only offered in the fall.
