Designed by: Richard Serra
This sculpture was selected because of its location and typology.
Typology: Large scale sculpture
Location and Spatial Context: Zkreet in the Brouq Nature Reserve in Qatar
It is a vast sculpture both in terms of its size and span. It gives a new meaning to its landscape space and makes the space more interesting. So this art piece was worth investigating.
This artwork is a collection of 4 steel plates that span over a kilometer, and can be explored from either end. The topography of the land allows the center two plates to be placed higher than the end plates. Despite the great distance between the plates, all the four plates can be seen from either end.
This artwork gives a whole new identity to its location as it is far away for the main Doha city in Qatar. Richard Serra has created a “place within a place”. It gives a demarcation to the landscape between east and west. If this piece wasn’t there this land would be undifferentiated as most of the landscape is out there.
