Seven

Designed by: Richard Serra

Location and Spatial Context: This is a very interesting sculpture to investigate on because of the relationship with its surrounding skyscrapers and the Museum of Islamic Arts designed by the architect I.M. Pei. It is situated in the park outside the museum on a man-made projection of land surrounded by water.

Typology: Abstract with textured surface material

This 8o feet tall structure was oxidized to get the shades of orange rust on its surface. The structure is a cluster of seven plates, four inches thick, placed in such a way that they hold the thrust of each otherand form a narrow opening from the inside that shapes like a heptagon. This heptagonal shape was inspired from the repeated use of the number ‘7’ in the Qur’an.
