Prof. Abdelaziz Bouras, the lead PI (LPI) of the CEPROQHA NPRP project, co-organized with the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) a stakeholders workshop on cultural heritage in the Digital Era. The project is a collaboration between Qatar University and Brunel University London, and is funded by QNRF. The workshop was held on 7th of October and was inaugurated by Dr. Julia Gonella, the Director of Museum of Islamic Art, and Dr. Munir Tag, Senior Program Manager – ICT at QNRF.
The workshop highlighted the importance of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies to effectively preserve the cultural heritage, as a history transfer medium, and increase the engagement of people in the sector. The event consisted of two discussion panels and a demonstration session. Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Ali chaired a Panel on the “Preservation and Exploitation of Digitized Museum Objects” and Dr. Somaya Al-Maadeed participated in a Panel focusing on the “Analysis, Restoration, and Collection Management of Historical Manuscripts”. Speakers from Brunel University London, UCL Qatar and Qatar National Library also contributed to this successful workshop.
In the demo session, some of the objects of the Museum were digitized in 3D, optimized by AI techniques, and displayed on a real-world 3D screen allowing contact-less interaction and immersion.
