At the heart of city, the Main Plaza Conservancy envisioned the fabric structures as a vital piece of a redevelopment focused on the vibrant culture, colors and language of San Antonio. Main Plaza, inviting for both residents and tourists, needed full shade over its sitting areas and musical stages. Fabrication difficulties included utilizing 3-D design software to create hundreds of different fabric panels, each with a unique dimension and shape to accurately fit the curved, multiplane steel columns and cross beams. In respecting the historic Main Plaza area, installation presented several challenges such as on-site welding of steel columns and horizontal members, avoiding water fountains and stone pavers and ensuring the safety of employees and visitors in the busy plaza. The fabric structures are a vital shade solution for Main Plaza, while encouraging San Antonians to savor the sights and sounds of culture.
